Hi there crafty friends! Emma here, and I am excited to share with you my project using ColorBox® ColoriQue by Lisa Jimenez. This month, we are focusing on wood and metal and I was lucky enough to receive some wonderful elements from Walnut Hollow and U-Paint Crafts. You will definitely want to check out the amazing range of surfaces and innovative shapes both of these companies have to offer.
As soon as I saw these pieces together, I imagined the fairy trapped in the mason jar. How happy she would be to escape and fly free! This is how my project was born.
I used ColorBox® ColoriQue to paint directly onto the metal fairy’s surface. (For larger metal pieces, you can spray with a white primer before painting with the ColoriQue). I found that the ColoriQue picked up the tiny details of the metal beautifully without needing to use much product.
I used Frisco Bay for her wings and Moss Landing for her hair. Avocado was perfect for the top of her dress and Wisteria for the flower petal skirt. Ruby Slippers and Honey Bee were used on the flower she is holding and Verdigris for her shoes. I mixed the beautiful brown of her skin from Pacific Ocean, Moss Landing, Black Diamond, Ruby Slippers and Honey Bee. You will need to experiment a little with the proportions to get the exact brown tone that you’d like. It’s hard to miss how easily these inks blend together to make new colors and tones.
Next, I worked on the background of the wood mason jar. To start, I painted a layer of white gesso on the raw wood in order to give a nicely sealed surface to work on. When the gesso was dry, I built up layers of colour using Colorbox® pigment inks, in Canary, Banana Custard, Sunflower and Burnt Sienna. I used some Lettuce and Frost White to add depth and highlights.
I added some more background elements such as modeling paste through a stencil, some leaf and butterfly stamps, and a paper flower. To finish it off and tie my elements together, I painted a leaf vine in the centre of the piece using ColoriQue in Black Diamond, Verdigris, Honey Bee and Snow Summit.
It is awesome how easily you can paint with the ColoriQue because of its beautifully smooth and lush consistency. To give the leaves a little extra texture, I used ColorBox® Top Boss embossing ink and clear embossing powder. Some yellow, green and clear rhinestones and a ‘Freedom’ tag completes the background. The only thing left to do is place the fairy with her arms outstretched as she flies out of the jar to freedom!
I loved making this project and the products were so inspiring! Which of these elements inspires you for your next mixed media project?
