Happy Early Autumn! With the start of school and the unofficial end of summer at hand, it’s time to start my favorite season of making things. I love making things for Dia de los Muertos and Halloween! Allow me to usher in the Fall of Makings and continue our month-long “Wood & Metal” theme with this “Day of the Dead” inspired shadow box.
A simple wood cut from a local craft store, some ColorBox® ColoriQue by Lisa Jimenez, and Easy Sculpt epoxy clay from ETI and you have the beginnings of a phenomenal Day of the Dead project that you could leave up all year round.
Blend the two parts of the Easy Sculpt clay according to the instructions. Roll the clay into long “worms” and shape the pieces around the fancy cuts of the wood piece. A good tip to know: keep a small container of water on hand to wet your fingers. It helps the epoxy clay to not stick to your hands. What’s really cool is if you are impatient like me, you can slap some ColoriQue onto the clay before it cures! And ColoriQue works like a dream on epoxy clay. One coat is all it took to get that beautiful, vibrant finish.
Finish the skull embellishing with some beads. As my clay cured, ColoriQue dried, and bead glue set, I began tossing some milagros charms onto my background and gluing them down.
Did you know that ColoriQue is a dream on laser cut masonite? My papel picado flags are dressed for the season in vibrant, semi-glossy hues that just scream “Day of the Dead!” Absolutely luscious color applied with a simple paintbrush!
Use the reverse side of a stretched canvas as a framed shadow box. There are so many different ways you can dress up the frame and the edges. I used my vibrant, ready-to-party picado, some ribbon trim, and a truck load of beads. Pop the skull away from the flat background of the canvas with some tall beads or dowels, or whatever you have on hand.
Using wood, metal, some fabulous ColoriQue inks and other simple mediums, what kind of Fall or Autumn crafts are you favorite to make? Are you a Day of the Dead lover like myself or do you prefer more Halloween and Autumn season inspired projects? Let me know in the comments!
