Hi friends! Dana Tatar here today sharing my tutorial for how I used ColorBox® ColoriQue by Lisa Marie Jimenez to transform a Walnut Hollow Basswood Box and a U-Paint Crafts Garden Trellis Metal Paintable into a whimsical Fairy Garden Box. I had a lot of fun with this project! I altered this box for my youngest daughter who is a big fan of fairies.
The unfinished wood box and metal paintable were wonderful “blank” materials. The design possibilities are endless in terms of how to finish these pieces.
In addition to the items show above, I also used raw chipboard leaves and paper flowers to decorate the box, both of which are easily painted with ColorBox® ColoriQue.
Step One: Wash the U-Paint metal piece with mild soap and warm water. Next, apply a white spray primer to the metal piece and the box. Note: The white primer helps the true shades of ColoriQue to shine. The primer also acts as a sealant on the wood so that the ColoriQue isn’t absorbed. This allows the ColoriQue to dry on top of the wood surface, which uses less product.
Step Two: Use a paintbrush to apply ColorBox® ColoriQue to the U-Paint Garden Trellis. Next, print and cut a digital fairy image and glue it in place in the center of the metal piece. Then, apply ColorBox® ColoriQue to the chipboard leaves and paper flowers.
Step Three: Use Art Daubers to sponge ColorBox® ColoriQue onto the box. Note: I used Honey Bee and Frisco Bay as the ground and sky colors. In retrospect, I think I would have painted some grasses along the yellow/blue line to continue the landscape outside the trellis.
Step Four: Use the Walnut Hollow HotMarks Tool with the Shading Point to burn a vine and leaves around the garden trellis and over the edges and down the side of the box. Glue the painted chipboard leaves and flowers to the box along the burned leafy vines.
Step Five: Use the Walnut Hollow HotMarks Tools with the Tapered Point to burn an initial onto the bottom left corner of the box lid. Designer Tip: Use a rub-on letter or stamped letter as a wood burning template.
I’m really pleased with this Fairy Garden Box. I’d love to know how you would decorate a similar box. Leave me a note in the comments section!
