Hi Crafty friends! Welcome to my blog, today I am sharing with you my Catrina Mixed Media Canvas. As many of you know I am a jewelry artist but lately I have been pushing myself out of my comfort zone and trying mixed media, drawing and painting on canvases. My crafty friend Rita Barakat is an inspiration to me. I look at her beautiful whimsical girls and wish I could do art like she does.
Rita has a line of stencils called “So you say you can’t draw”. These stencils are made to help you draw girl faces. The stencils are easy to use and trust me they do help you learn to draw, as this project was completed using her 8.5 x 11 inch stencil.
My inspiration for this project was a combination of Rita’s whimsical girls and a Catrina painting by my tattoo artist Carl. I had a vision in my mind of how I wanted to combine the two inspirations and then did a rough drawing using Rita’s stencils on paper first. Using the stencil and the drawing as guide I completed the canvas using ColoriQue, white acrylic paint and fun accents.
I first applied a layer of gesso to the canvas and then traced the stencil onto the canvas. Then I added the Catrina accents to the face. The entire canvas was painted using ColoriQue inks and white acrylic paint. Using ColoriQue made the hair easy to do, as the colors just blended together. For the hair color I used Black Diamond, Pacific Ocean and Snow Summit. The grey in her hair, is Black Diamond mixed with Snow Summit.
A black metal cross and black rhinestones accent her face. Yes, those are fake eyelashes on her! Each eye took 1 complete set of lashes, they are overlapped.
Next I painted a metal butterfly with ColoriQue and added a little bling with rhinestones and a skull. The assortment of silk and paper flowers were attached to her hair along with black lace, a bow and the metal butterfly.
I am so happy with how this canvas turned out! She is just waiting to find a place to hang in my home. Using Rita’s stencils gave me the confidence I needed to be able to complete this project and now I am ready for the next one. 🙂 Thank you for stopping by today and I hope I inpired you to make your own Catrina mixed media canvas.
